The Grand Cherokee is a real Jeep that can take on North America’s most difficult trails, in contrast to its rivals that are soft-road competent. Despite having this potential, it doesn’t penalize passengers with a rough highway ride or demand that you forgo luxurious options.
The Grand Cherokee’s attractiveness is increased by its ten various models and a wide variety of costs. While the Summit, the top-of-the-line model, is a leather-lined luxo-ute, base Laredo vehicles are sparse. The Grand Cherokee’s basic V6 isn’t all that exciting. In our tests, the 0-60 mph time was 8.0 seconds, which is slow for a midsize SUV with five seats. We advise purchasing the optional V8. However, the brakes are powerful. A stop at 60 mph required 124 feet in Edmunds testing, which is a manageable distance for a vehicle of this size.

The Grand Cherokee’s heavyweight has an adverse effect on acceleration, handling, and general drivability. The steering, which feels detached from the road, is another drawback. Nothing about this utility vehicle is sporty. Rough pavement causes the 2019 Grand Cherokee to shake throughout the chassis and into the cabin. This is fixed with the optional air suspension, as our Trailhawk test vehicle had a smoother ride. The Jeep tracks straight and has a decent heaviness to the steering, which makes for relaxed highway travel. The Grand Cherokee’s brake pedal initially feels soft but quickly becomes firm and performs similarly to other vehicles in its class.

Don’t assume the Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t safe just because it’s tough. High-strength steel builds a sturdy car frame that works with a full array of airbags to protect occupants. The Grand Cherokee gives the cottage a feeling of seclusion. The V6 is generally well-muffled. The engine runs at full power, causing a slight rumble from under the hood, but it is neither bothersome nor particularly satisfying. Otherwise, it’s so silent that it nearly seems serene. The air conditioner operates swiftly, and the chairs are really supportive. However, the heated and ventilated seats don’t work very well.


The Grand Cherokee offers ample internal space in all four main sitting positions, including ample headroom and legroom. Additionally, it boasts a strong driving stance, excellent vision, and straightforward controls. Despite the elevated seating position, the driver has a wide range of seat and steering-wheel adjustments, which makes everything easily accessible.
Despite being a little old, the Uconnect infotainment interface is nonetheless simple to use because of its big, tactile knobs for the music and fan speed. The thick windscreen pillars that partially block your view during turns are the only real drawbacks.

Fuel efficiency and actual MPG

The Grand Cherokee is a fuel-efficient SUV by SUV standards, thanks to the gasoline V-6 beneath its hood. Also, its highway fuel-economy estimations were accurate. Although the V-8 can tow more weight, it consumes significantly more fuel. The EPA has not yet rated the optional diesel engine, so its fuel efficiency is unclear. On our real-world highway fuel-economy loop, our test vehicle, which had the standard V-6 engine, achieved 25 mpg, matching its 25 mpg EPA rating.


Although the Grand Cherokee is undoubtedly practical, its 36.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the back seats isn’t the best in its class. It lags behind compact cars like the Honda CR-V. The full-size spare under the rear floor is primarily to blame for the lesser capacity. Hey, there’s a full-size spare on the other hand! You’ll need that if you tow or drive off-road, two things the Grand Cherokee excels at.
A small center console, can-sized cupholders in the front and back seats, and skinny door pockets are the only small-item storage options. The reactor seats at anchors are easily accessible and well-marked, providing ample space for most child seats. The Summit model’s V6 has a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds, while optional V8s offer a higher maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds.
