The 2022 Audi SQ8 is the mid-range model of the Q8 series. It falls between the basic Q8 and the full-bore RS Q8, following Audi’s current naming practice. However, the SQ8 is still quite hot thanks to its 500 horsepower. The SQ8 can accelerate to 60 mph from a stop in only 4.0 seconds thanks to a twin-turbocharged V8 powering all four wheels. The SQ8 has exceptional off-the-line traction because of its Quattro all-wheel-drive system. These also make it feel surprisingly small for a large SUV.
Does the 2022 Audi SQ8 qualify as a budget Lambo as it shares a chassis and motor with the Lamborghini Urus? Actually, no. The SQ8’s disposition leans closer toward that of the ordinary Q8 than the noisy Urus or the mechanically comparable RS Q8 variant. Also, it has 500 horsepower and is designed as a performance SUV.
This happy medium offers athletic optics and amazing straight-line performance without sacrificing comfort or usability. It will be ideal for some customers. Many performance-oriented SUVs, like the Mercedes-AMG GLE class and the Porsche Cayenne, deliver comparable outcomes. But the Audi’s chopped-roof design gives it tremendous curb appeal.
Beyond its outstanding performance capabilities, the 2022 Audi SQ8 is a comfortable and opulent vehicle. It comes with a sleek, premium interior and a quiet, compliant ride. However, there are a few issues with the model. The dual-screen center stack structure isn’t very user-friendly, and the voice recognition might use some improvement. The SQ8, however, is a tempting alternative to other mid-range fastback SUVs, like the BMW X6 M50i, Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, and Porsche Cayenne GTS Coupe.
What has changed for 2022?
For 2022, Audi has added more driver-assistance technology to the SQ8, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, as standard equipment. Carbon fiber interior trim is now standard on all models, and a new Executive package adds heated rear seats, rear window sunshades, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery on more surfaces, HD matrix LED headlamps, and an ambient interior lighting system with several color options. Additionally available to buyers are new red-painted brake calipers and the Carbon Optic package, which features distinctive 22-inch wheels and black exterior details
2022 Audi Sq8: Performance
The fact that you’re switching from the ordinary Q8 to the SQ8 is probably due to its greater performance. With an engine capable of propelling this SUV from 0 to 60 mph in an extremely rapid 4.0 seconds, this performance-oriented model will not let you down.
The SQ8’s well-calibrated brakes make slowing down in regular driving a breeze. The free summer tires would have been a better match because the all-season tires on our test model didn’t provide the grip we were hoping to match with this model’s power. Driving around town with the SQ8 isn’t particularly smooth either. The auto stop-start system switches off the engine too early, causing jerky pauses, and there is some latency between pressing the accelerator and the transmission downshifting.
Even though the 591-horsepower RS Q8 currently reigns supreme in the class, the SQ8 is a superb performer. With only 91 fewer horsepower than the hot-pot RS variant, the SQ8’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 accelerates to 60 mph in just over four seconds. This SUV moves quite quickly.
2022 Audi Sq8: Comfort
Considering its sports aspirations, the 2022 Audi SQ8 is remarkably comfy. The standard adaptive suspension dampers and air suspension give you the pillow-like ride you’d expect from a luxury SUV in Comfort drive mode. It doesn’t have a floating sensation. For a firmer feel, you can also turn up the dynamic mode.
The padding is supportive but compliant, and the leather upholstery is pleasant. However, we would prefer if the sports front seats in the 2022 Audi SQ8 had greater adjustability options. Also, not all body types may be compatible with their fixed front headrests. Although fixed headrests are common in sports cars, they are unnecessary in a family-friendly SUV.
The SQ8 has exquisite seats. The seating posture is ideal, the bolstering is superb, and the leather feels of the highest quality. Like many Audi S and RS vehicles I’ve tested, it feels like someone poured me into the front buckets. It also doesn’t hurt to have warmth, ventilation, and a massage feature.
The adaptive air suspension keeps the 2022 Audi SQ8 feeling accommodating in Comfort mode. Also, the ride is soft and supportive enough that you won’t need to visit a chiropractor afterward. The one major drawback is that passenger and cargo space is constrained in comparison to a normal-roofed SUV.
Although there is debate over how to use the SQ8’s infotainment system, there is no denying that the cabin technology is quite advanced and has a ton of capabilities. Also, it offers wireless Apple CarPlay support. The standard Bang & Olufsen audio system needs some fine-tuning to eliminate some muddiness on tracks with numerous instruments.
Even though Audi’s voice control system isn’t as complete as Mercedes’ MBUX, it still performs admirably when compared to most other systems on the market. It can easily turn on the driver’s seat warmer, pull up an address or place of interest, or change to a satellite radio station.
2022 Audi Sq8:Storage
The cargo capacity of the three-row SQ7 is still the same as that of the 2022 Audi SQ8. You can also lower the rear using the air suspension for simpler access to the big load compartment. A respectable 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space is provided by the split seats, which fold flat. Except for the large door pockets, storage space is limited for small items.
Planning to serve as a family taxi with your 500-hp monster SUV? The ample legroom means that car seats of any size will fit, and the car seat anchors are concealed under detachable covers.
The SQ8 has a generous 7,700-pound towing capacity for its class thanks to the optional towing kit. Another cool feature of the SQ8 is its trailer movement assistance. By swiping left or right on the lower infotainment display, you may utilize it to conveniently guide your trailer while backing up.
Driver Assistance and Safety Features
The 2022 Audi SQ8 comes equipped with a variety of driver-assistance technologies. These include more sophisticated adaptive cruise control capabilities in addition to fundamental features like automatic emergency braking.
The five-seat 2022 Audi Q8 combines SUV size and adaptability with a slick and aggressive appearance. The 3.0-liter V-6 engine in the Q8 produces 335 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed automated transmission. All-wheel drive is required. There are additional performance SQ8 and RS Q8 models available with turbocharged V-8 engines that produce 500 and 591 horsepower, respectively.
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar, the Maserati Levante, and the BMW X6 are rivals. In the backseat of the 2022 Audi SQ8, there is 20.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
