The 2024 Hyundai Sonata features a fresh exterior, a modern interior, and simplified powertrain choices.
Although the radical spaceship-like design may seem otherwise, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata is a development of the model from the previous year. For instance, the rear end has an identical upturned spoiler that blends into the taillight. It is reminiscent of the Lamborghini Urus substituted for the gaping catfish maw up front.
Overview
In the hopes of rousing the other family sedans, the Hyundai Sonata injects some personality into the market. Updated front and rear bumpers, new headlights, new taillights, and significant interior improvements are all part of its mid-cycle makeover. While the Sonata’s current engines—a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 191 horsepower, a 180-horsepower turbocharged four, and a 290-horsepower turbo four in the N Line model—remain. All-wheel drive is now a choice for models with the 2.5-liter four. Also continuing is the 195-hp Sonata Hybrid, which achieves impressive fuel efficiency.
Hyundai eliminates the 1.6-liter turbo-4 engine, leaving three dependable options. Most cars have a standard 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with 191 horsepower, and an 8-speed automatic transmission either transfers power to the front wheels or the optional all-wheel drive. The N Line vehicles feature a 2.5-liter turbo-4 with 290 horsepower and a dual-clutch automatic, but it’s uncertain if the 0-60 mph time will decrease from six seconds.
What has changed for 2024?
For 2024, Hyundai updates the Sonata model. The oddball daytime running lights that spanned the width of the front bumper have replaced the oddball daytime running lights that ran parallel to the hood. Although the taillights and rear bumper cover have improved. There have been so many significant changes in the interior. Two 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreens are now on a single curved display mount.
Additionally, the design of the steering wheel has changed.. The gear selector was relocated by Hyundai from the center console to a knob that protrudes from the steering wheel. All-wheel drive is now a mechanical option, but it’s only available for vehicles with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
The transformation includes a cowl that descends into a light bar that spans the nose. A completely new front end is beneath that light bar. The face is accentuated with a large lower grille featuring a chrome border, resulting in a sportier and wider appearance. The vehicle features rectangular headlamp housings on the ends, raked air intakes at the bottom, and a body line running down the side to the rear.
The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in the Sonata continues to propel the front wheels. Although Hyundai hasn’t yet released it, we think this engine is a carryover, so we anticipate it will produce 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Optional all-wheel-drive technology is new for this year, making driving in bad weather less nerve-wracking than in previous years.
Similar to the previous model, a second body line curves over the beltline to the back, where a light bar spans a trunk that is topped with a spoiler. The large swath of the trunk is covered in backup lights that dim sequentially, emphasizing the Sonata’s lowered appearance. N-Line versions with a focus on performance include distinctive 19-inch wheels and quad exhaust finishers.
Hyundai has reoriented the interior to match the car’s wide, low stance. Under a single sheet of glass, the low dash has two 12.3-inch screens that are bent toward the driver.
2024 Hyundai Sonata: How Does the Sonata’s Technology Work?
Every Sonata model will include cordless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base Sonata came with these wireless features as standard, but if you chose any other trim, you’d receive a bigger screen with navigation that needed a wired connection to playback AA or AC. Hyundai has finally made all of its vehicles wirelessly compatible. The infotainment system now has over-the-air upgrade capability thanks to the 2024 Sonata. Wireless phone connectivity is the source of the excitement.
In place of just a haptic touch panel, genuine climate controls are located beneath the dash shelf, which is positioned above a thin band of vents that are stretched end to end. Between the stack and the console, which appears slimmer and better suited for driving with less clutter, a wireless smartphone charger protrudes. Similar to the Ioniq 5, the gear shifter has been relocated to the steering column, and the makeover is finished with a new three-spoke steering wheel.
Connectivity and Information
Hyundai’s infotainment system borrows a page from BMW’s playbook and features a sizable dashboard display module with two 12.3-inch screens. The driver’s controls are on one touchscreen, and the infotainment controls are on the other touchscreen. Wireless smartphone charging is also a standard feature, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is an optional 12-speaker Bose stereo system.
2024 Hyundai Sonata: Features for Driver Assistance and Safety
Automatic high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and a driver-attention warning system that can detect distracted or fatigued driving are all part of Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of driver-assistance systems, which is included as standard equipment. When you are waiting for it outside, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata can even pull into and out of a parking space. However, the top-tier Limited trim is the only one with such a function. Visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to learn more about the results of the Sonata’s crash tests. Important safety elements include:
Standard automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning
Lane-keeping assistance and the common lane-departure warning
available rear cross-traffic warning and blind-spot monitoring
2024 Hyundai Sonata: Interior

Adults of most sizes can fit comfortably in the front seats of the Sonata, and although the roofline abruptly slopes downward, the back seats have decent headroom. Be aware that models with a panoramic sunroof may not be the best choice if you wish to comfortably fit 6-footers in the back. No matter which trim level you choose, both rows have plenty of legroom. And as the 2024 Sonata is a significant update rather than a total redesign, these qualities ought to remain.
Although the interior of the Sonata from a year ago appears great, a closer glance reveals that the arrangement isn’t quite as user-friendly as, for example, the new Honda Accord. Additionally, some competitors use nicer materials. But starting in 2024, everything is expected to alter, much like the exterior look.
Summary
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata received a significant redesign. In addition to a more unified and futuristic design thanks to the aesthetic update. The upgraded interior and universal wireless smartphone connectivity should benefit users on a daily basis.
