“2024 Toyota 4Runner” It’s difficult to argue that the Toyota 4Runner is still one of the most appealing SUVs on the market. It is sturdy, impenetrable, and, most importantly, it has a fantastic appearance. The fifth generation, which began manufacturing in 2009, has an issue because it is no longer relevant. On the highway, it gets less than 20 mpg, and the new Ford Bronco’s five-speed automatic transmission has just half as many gears. Toyota needs to give us a 4Runner improvement, and happily, one is on the way.
Here is all the information you need to know about the upcoming 6th generation 4Runner from Toyota.

2024 Toyota 4Runner: Pros
- Off-road SUV capability that is genuine
- Lowering the rear window electrically
- The design is still appealing.
Cons:
- Clearly out of date
- Difficult on-road dynamics
- The thirsty V-6 engine
2024 Toyota 4Runner: When will the sixth-generation Toyota 4Runner appear?
We have yet to hear any news from Toyota regarding a launch date for the new 4Runner. Toyota has improved its line of off-road trucks and SUVs. This process begins with the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra. It continues with the all-new 2023 Sequoia. Toyota recently revealed new Tacoma and Land Cruiser models for 2024, which could push back the 4Runner’s launch until the 2024 calendar year.
At the launch of the Land Cruiser, did Toyota tease the new 4Runner?
At the end of the 2024 Land Cruiser introduction, Toyota revealed a future product with the dark shape of a new, more compact off-road SUV. Our first thought is that this is the production version of the Compact Cruiser E concept. However, it might just be a brand-new 4Runner. The 4Runner’s family and luxury items should theoretically fit in the Land Cruiser. This could allow Toyota to build a smaller, more rugged 4Runner that competes more clearly with the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
Will the new 4Runner have a four-cylinder engine?
There’s almost no doubt about it anymore. Toyota has reduced engine sizes in trucks and SUVs. V8 models become V6. The 4Runner, currently powered by a 4.0-liter V6, will likely switch to a 4-cylinder powertrain.
If we assume that Toyota isn’t planning on making any truly crazy changes, such as going all-electric with the 4Runner nameplate, then the best bet is that the 4Runner engine line will follow the Tacoma’s engine with a basic 2.4-liter gasoline engine with 270 horsepower.
Will the new Toyota 4Runner have a hybrid engine?
This seems possible. Toyota previously said all vehicles would have at least one hybrid option by 2025. However, Toyota has included the 2.4-liter iForce Max hybrid engine as the upgraded engine for the Tacoma, with 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Toyota might modify the 4Runner in a similar manner.
One difficulty is that the Land Cruiser also uses this powertrain. If Toyota keeps the 4Runner in its current form, a fully luxurious Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro would rival a basic Spartan Land Cruiser with the same engine.
Almost certainly. The Tundra’s interior undergoes significant modernization, while the 4Runner is expected to feature Toyota’s latest infotainment system, first introduced on the Lexus NX. Typically, Toyota doesn’t try to impress buyers with the quality of interior materials. But expect significant improvements to help you fend off the competition.
A 4Runner EV doesn’t seem likely any time soon. Toyota has previewed its 2021 electric vehicle roadmap. Fall 2022 reports suggest Toyota is reconsidering that roadmap. We’ve seen an idea that resembles an electric Tacoma quite a bit. But we’ve never seen anything that looks like an electric 4Runner. However, Toyota will eventually offer an electric 4Runner. However, barring a complete redesign of the 4Runner, we don’t expect an electric vehicle to appear when the sixth generation launches.
Will the new 4Runner still be made in Japan?
Toyota is updating its body-on-frame trucks and SUVs using the TNGA-F truck platform for the new J300 Land Cruiser, Tundra, Lexus LX 600, and Sequoia. A smaller version is expected to be used on both the 4Runner and the new Tacoma pickup truck.
The 4Runner, like the Land Cruiser, has traditionally been manufactured in Japan. However, the new shared platform’s goal is to reduce production costs. Toyota will continue to manufacture the American Land Cruiser in Japan. However, some or all 4Runner manufacturing could relocate to North America.
What will the cost of the 4Runner be in 2024?
No idea. The current situation The current 4Runner has an MSRP of $39,555 and a peak price of $54,020. Toyota has stated that the Land Cruiser will start at around $50,000. Any rise in 4Runner pricing would run up against that.
