The latest Galaxy S23 Ultra from Samsung is unquestionably the best stylus phone money can buy. With up to 4,096 pressure levels, the company’s distinctive S Pen is as intuitive as ever, packed with productivity tools like off-screen memos and Smart Select, and conveniently located at the bottom of the handset.
Since the early days of the Galaxy Note, Samsung’s Notes app, which is at the heart of the stylus writing experience, has also improved. It’s now possible to work on a document concurrently with other users, and dragging and dropping files and photos into note-taking software has never been simpler.
We’ve barely begun to explore the stylus experience with the S23 Ultra, believe it or not. The large and less curved 6.8-inch display, the enormous 5,000mAh battery that powers the lights (and digital ink), and the increase in base storage to 256GB, allowing you to store even more memos and files than before, are just a few of the small upgrades that make this year’s Ultra model an excellent phone overall.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is without a doubt the most affordable stylus phone available today. It comes with the most recent version of Samsung’s proprietary stylus, the S Pen. With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and a low 9 ms latency, this is ideal for anyone who takes notes or doodles. And, as Samsung’s most recent large phone release, it provides the best stylus experience without a doubt.
Whether we were using Photoshop Lightroom brushes or doing some digital drawing, it was a pleasure to use and had low latency in our testing. You may also use it to scribble down thoughts, conduct Air operations, start a new note right on the screen, or use the S Pen to Text function to transform your handwriting into text as you write on the screen.
That’s not everything. You can even operate apps remotely with the S Pen through Bluetooth. By pressing and holding the S Pen button, you can swiftly activate programs like the Camera app. Then, when using such an app, you can use it as a shutter release. Bluetooth will operate up to 30 feet away.
For charging, the S Pen fits snugly into the side of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It’s as simple as inserting it into the slot to start charging. A complete charge takes as little as 40 seconds. However, if you don’t want to drain your phone’s battery, you can set it to charge just when the phone is charging. It’s worth noting that the S Pen still works when it’s not charged; you just lose its remote capabilities.
By elevating the S Pen while pushing and holding the S Pen button, you can turn up the volume while listening to music. Similarly, you can reduce the volume by lowering it. Overall, Samsung has put care into making the S Pen useful for purposes other than writing and drawing, and it has delivered. There’s also a wonderful 6.8-inch screen to utilize it on, which has a brightness rating of 1,750 nits, making it the brightest Galaxy ever created.
In short, among the phones with stylus, this is the most affordable available today, and if you can afford it, there’s no reason to look elsewhere.
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra by Samsung

The Note 20 Ultra, like the S22 Ultra, is a gorgeous Samsung phone with excellent S Pen integration. With the exception of a slightly larger (6.9 inch) screen, the newer S22 Ultra outperforms it in almost every way. For example, the latter boasts a quicker processor, better cameras, and two optical zoom levels (3x and 10x), whereas the Note 20 Ultra only has 5x.
Having said that, we found using the S Pen for note taking, sketching, and app use to be a wonderful experience in our review. The pen, nicely incorporated on the left side of the phone’s base, feels incredibly natural on the screen, with the same Bluetooth connection and low latency as on the S22 Ultra. So, exactly like with the latter, you can use it to switch modes, access apps, operate a shutter release with the camera, and so on, and it provides a very instantaneous response.
In summary, if you can, grab the S22 Ultra: it’s a superior smartphone with stylus overall. If contract or price forces you to go for the Note 20 Ultra, there’s still a lot to enjoy here for pen enthusiasts.
Galaxy S21 Ultra by Samsung

The S21 Ultra, the S22 Ultra’s predecessor, is the only other Galaxy phone that supports the S Pen (the Galaxy S21 and S21+ do not). If the S22 Ultra is out of your price range, you may be tempted to buy the S21 Ultra instead, which has the same battery life, IP68 water resistance, and overall features.
However, the S21 Ultra does not include an S Pen, so you must purchase one separately. It does not integrate into the phone as it does on the S22 Ultra; therefore, the closest alternative is to purchase a supporting case. Furthermore, the S21 Ultra’s regular S Pen lacks Bluetooth capability. (On the plus side, this implies there will be no fees. On the negative side, it precludes remote functionality such as activating a wireless shutter.) That requires the more expensive S Pen Pro, which costs $99.
In fact, if you want all of those things, you might as well get an S22 Ultra for the money! If you’re content with the regular S Pen and don’t require the fancy Bluetooth functions,

Do you want to use a smartphone with stylus that folds out into a large screen? The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a sleek, spacious 7.6-inch display. Don’t get us wrong: its successor, the Note20 Ultra (ranked second on our list), is superior and a better phone overall, with better cameras, more versatile zoom, and a speedier processor. And, of the two, the best stylus phone in particular, has a faster updating display and lower latency.
Having said that, the Galaxy Note 10 Plus is still a powerful and excellent phone overall, with a great 6.8-inch AMOLED display, 256GB-512GB of storage, and long battery life from the 4,300 mAh battery. As stated in the opening of this post, Samsung makes the best phones with stylus on the market today. But perhaps you have a reason for avoiding Samsung items in particular. In that case, here’s our top recommendation.
The redesigned Moto G Stylus 5G, released this year, includes a built-in stylus that slips into the phone and performs well at things like notetaking, photo editing, and navigating the interface.
In general, the phone sports a great 6.8-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution and a refresh rate of 120Hz, a fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, a big 5,000-mAh battery, and a respectable 50MP + 8MP + 2MP rear camera configuration. Given the low price, these are all extremely impressive specifications.
But keep in mind that the stylus is rather basic and cannot perform all of the fun tricks that Samsung’s newest S Pen can. However, given that the Moto G Stylus 5G is almost half the price of the Samsung S22 Ultra (number one on our list), this may not be an issue for you.
